The Mendola panoramic road, built between 1880 and 1885, connects Appiano and Caldaro to the Non Valley (in Trentino). The long stretches without curves, a distinctive trait of this itinerary, make it possible to ascend breathing in the fresh air, filling your lungs and allowing your gaze to wonder across the magnificent landscapes of the surrounding valley.
The wide road that leads from San Michele to the Pass unwinds along 17 switchbacks that cut through the mountain, with splendid views that extend all the way to Lake Caldaro. The slopes are regular, never excessive. Like any tourist place, the peak bustles with souvenir shops, bars and restaurants.
This itinerary is a must for cyclists in the area (even the Giro d’Italia has climbed this summit on more than one occasion). Not by chance, every year (the last Saturday in September) traffic is closed, giving cyclists free rein of the road.
