Campo Imperatore… a mountaintop amphitheatre

LenghtLenght37.8 km
Elevation gainElevation gain1,472 m
DifficultyDifficultyDifficult

Mountains may not reach Himalayan heights amongst the Apennine peaks of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, but their silence and majesty is enough to stop you in your tracks and make you admire the panoramic views.

Description

With its consistently ascending elevation, Campo Imperatore demands complete concentration. Don’t let its gentle slope fool you! With its wide paths, lack of curves, long, straight stretches and abundant open areas, this route doesn’t feel like it’s gaining in elevation. Trust us, though, when we tell you that the gradient slope remains consistently between 6% and 8%, and that this ascent continues for a long distance: 37.8 km. The last six or seven kilometres will really put you to the test, in the same spot that ‘The Pirate’ Marco Pantani started his fateful charge, and the gradient makes its way into double figures.
