The one that will start on 4th May from Jerusalem, regardless of what will happen and how it will end, will be a historical edition for the Giro d'italia. For the first time, a Grand Tour will start outside of Europe. Three stages in Israel with the first stage dedicated to Bartali, the "Righteous Among the Nations", who risked his life to save 800 Jews from Nazi persecution.

3,546.2 is the total amount of kilometres in this edition including 44,000 metres of elevation gain.

And, therefore, the countdown for this edition has already begun. The cities and the towns are getting ready to welcome the cyclists, the giro caravan and soon the two-wheel enthusiasts will be able to attend an unforgettable event in dreamy natural landscapes of Italy. It is no coincidence that the race has been renamed as "the hardest race in the world held in the most beautiful country".

Italy Bike territory: Abruzzo

From Campania to Abruzzo. From Pesco Sannita to Campo Imperatore through two of the most diverse regions of the peninsula. Campania for its history, different types of tourism and the magnificent landscapes of the Amalfi Coast. Abruzzo for its landscape: rugged mountains, luxuriant nature of its hills and sea.

Abruzzo on two wheels is named after 2 climbs: Campo Imperatore and Blockhaus. The first of these will be, in fact the arrival of stage number 9.

Italy Bike territory: Pantani climbs

It is one of the few stages which is completely flat and will end inside the Enzo e Dino Ferrari racetrack. From Osimo to Imola along the SS.16 “Adriatica” and the SS.9 “via Emilia”. It crosses all the "Pantani climb area", or the places where the "pirate" Marco Pantani was born, grew up and trained. A territory that goes from calm sea to plains interrupted by the rolling hills, that change before we know it, into mountains.

Italy Bike territory: Prosecco Area

If you are lovers of wine and history, do not miss out on this stage. From the Po Valley to Montello, another stage for sprinters where you can enjoy the delicious wine tasting of red Montello which, since the 2011 harvest, boasts the trademark Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin.

In the final section, they pass also some WWI landmarks starting from Piave.

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here", is one of the many quotes from Dante that welcomes cyclists on the first slopes of Monte Zoncolan. It will be the first Alpine stage in the Giro d'Italia.
Where the seconds can become minutes, where it will be difficult to not slalom to ease fatigue. They will climb 5 GPM for about 4400 m in vertical elevation. And 1.5 km before the start of the climb, there will be the usual pit stop to switch from cars to bikes.

Italy Bike territory: Dolomites of Sesto

From the Alps to the Dolomites, the route is short. There are two unprecedented climbs and for this reason cannot be missed in this cycling competition: the pass of Sant'Antonio and Costalissoio with almost all gradients above 10%. Not very hard, but not so easy. Who will wear the pink jersey?

Individual time trial fit for against-the-clock racers with long straights where you need to push hard on the pedals. It ends inside the town of Rovereto, lapped by the second longest river in Italy, the Adige. There are so many stories about this town such as Mozart's first concert in Italy or the priest who had the idea of constructing a bell by melting the bronze of the First World War cannons of all the nations who fought in the war.

If you have dreamt of Italy, you have also dreamt of Lake Garda. This is the quintessence of Italy: the rows of vineyards, the rolling green hills interrupted by dirt tracks and dips that eventually soften until they melt into the lake. Last stage for sprinters before arriving at the finish line in Rome.

The first stage is in the Western Alps. There are four long challenging GPM ascents. It also includes the Cima Coppi (the highest summit of this Giro), or the Colle delle Finestre with its 9kms of dirt road.

Italy Bike territory: Rome and its hills

This historical edition of the Giro d'Italia will end in the Capital of Italy, Rome. The riders will wind through many sites of historical interest such as the Imperial Forum, via Sistina, Piazza del Popolo, the Circus Maximus, and the thermal baths of Caracalla.
