3.518 kilometres with a total of 46,500 metres of elevation: these are the statistics for Giro d’Italia 2019. One of the toughest routes in recent years according to insiders. But the Giro d’Italia is not just a challenging sport, but also the opportunity to explore the beautiful country Italy and its cultural sites: Leonardo da Vinci, Gioacchino Rossini, The Arena of Verona, the unique scenery of the Alps and the Dolomites and the arrival in Aquila, 10 years after the terrible earthquake, are all part of this edition of the pink race.

Stage 3 Vinci > Orbetello

Italy Bike Territory: Tuscany

Set within the beautiful hills of Tuscany, beneath the slopes of Montalbano, stands Vinci. A medieval village which revolves around the illustrious Leonardo, the start town of stage 3. It is one of the few flat stages for the sprinters. The first part of the route is quite hard (with 2 short climbs), but the last 80 km are mostly flat and a sprint finish is to be expected.

Stage 4: Orbetello > Frascati

A tough stage which skirts through some symbolic places such as Maremma in Tuscany, Manciano and Pitigliano and then crossing into Tuscia and the Roman countryside to Frascati, the most famous of the Castelli Romani towns. This stage features continuous up and downs with different snags which could be a springboard for the finisseur.

Stage 7: Vasto > L’Aquila

Vasto is one of the most charming towns of Abruzzo. Its beautiful unique coast extends for 17 km. Stage 7 departs from here for Aquila crossing yet again an undulating section in the first part, but then there will be a tough climb in the second part thanks to the GPM of Le Svolte di Popoli. Aquila will also be remembered for the terrible earthquake in 2009.

Italy Bike territory: Adriatic Coast

First, a road race and the second, an individual time trial. The Giro d’Italia starts to take shape. The first three short, but hard climbs of Monte della Mattera, Monteluro and Gabicce Monte will show the best riders competing for the pink jersey, the next time trial could open up significant gaps. In fact, in the final climb, 12.2 km at an average gradient of 4.5% and maximum 11% in the initial part, riders ahead could make a difference.

Stage 15: Ivrea > Como

Classic fans have this final stage firmly in their minds. It is the same one as the Tour of Lombardy, the Autumn classic. The final is expected to be full of attacks and twists on the ascent of the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Colma di Sormano, Civiglio and San Fermo della Battaglia. In short, the best riders will be revealed.

Stage 16: Lovere > Ponte di Legno

Italy Bike Territory: Bormio / Stelvio

This is undoubtedly the queen stage of this 102nd edition of Giro d’italia. Not only because the riders will have to tackle over 5,700 metres of elevation, but because it features two symbolic climbs of Italy: The Gavia pass (Cima Coppi with its 2,618 metres) and the Mortirolo pass, a deadly climb of 12.8 km at an average gradient of 10% and maximum 18%.

Stage 17: Commezzadura > Anterselva, Stage 19: Treviso > San Martino di Castrozza

Italy Bike Territory: Veneto

29 May and 31 May

Nothing compared to the queen stage, but number 17 of this Giro d’Italia features 4 GPM’s: the Mendel pass, Naz, Terento and the final ascent of Anterselva.
Also the climbs of Montello, del Passo San Boldo, but especially San Martino di Castrozza in stage 19 cannot be underestimated, where they are expected to arrive.

Stage 20: Feltre > Croce d’Aune, Stage 21: Verona > Verona

Italy Bike Territory: Veneto & Lake Garda

01-02 June

Saturday 1 June stages its final mountain stage which features 5,000 metres of elevation split into 4 long and hard climbs: Cima Campo, Passo Manghen, Passo Rolle, Croce d’Aune-Monte Avena. The riders who have the courage to attack will also be able to overturn the classification before the last individual time trial in Verona with the finish line right inside the Arena.
