RECOMMENDED BIKE: A full-suspension bike with 110-mm front and rear forks, 29-inch wheels and extreme mountain gears.
Today’s itinerary follows a famous competition route, which starts from Lake Garda and then involves a very strenuous climb, similar to the Stelvio ascent but on a rough track. It takes us up to the ridge, from where we get a view over the Alto Garda Bresciano regional park, and then as far as the Tremalzo Pass. From here, the view over Lake Ledro is one of the most evocative to be found in any MTB competition.
The descents are very tricky, and it is for this reason that we advise you to use a full-suspension bike, but if you are very skilful, you can probably manage it with a front-suspension model.
Don’t say we haven’t warned you! In between the various descents, stop and enjoy the view of Lake Idro below you.
We won’t be visiting it, because we turn off beforehand for Limone.
Enjoy the trip.
From Lake to lake and back
Starting from Limone sul Garda, we ride along the side of the lake, including some sections through tunnels on a metalled surface.
A few km before Riva del Garda, we join an old, rough road which climbs up with some huge bends until meeting the entrance to a tunnel which takes you downhill.
You leave the tunnel on your left when you get to Predi Ledro, to then climb up to the lake by the old Ponale road. You barely touch the lake before heading on towards Tremalzo.
We are now a few kilometres into Trentino. There now begins a very long climb, which becomes a tough series of ups and downs towards the top.
The Idro Valley suddenly opens up on our right, with its delightful little lake in the middle.
There then begins a long, steep descent which takes us from an altitude of 1865 metres at Tremalzo to a height of about 60 metres at lake level.
With a series of technically difficult parts, and a stony section which really tests the remaining strength in our arms, we finally catch sight of the lake again after a circuit of 51 km: a route which has taken us along mule-tracks and amongst Dolomite peaks, meadows and lakes of great fascination and beauty.
